Why Am I Here?
by Dave Gadoury, Senior Pastor
Why am I here?
This is one of those big questions that can shape a destiny if it is taken seriously. How would
YOU answer it? Your response will define what is important to you, will give you clarity when the
fog rolls in, and will inspire your greatest achievements.
Recently an overlooked phrase in one of St. Paul’s letters helped me think about this a bit
differently. While pressing his case for the importance of the resurrection of Jesus to the life of
faith, the apostle sums up the purposes of Jesus’ life and work this way: “…that God may be all
in all” (1 Corinthians 15:28, NASB). Williams’ translation puts it this way: “…that God may be
everything to everybody.”
How’s that for a sharp-pointed personal mission statement? “My purpose is to live my life so that
God is everything to me.” That is God’s purpose for all of us; it is why He put us here.
That got me to thinking about what that would look like. Since it is such an all-inclusive
statement, I couldn’t possibly begin to cover it here, but I think it would have to at least mean this:
• God is the one I want to please.
• God is the source of my best ideas.
• God is the joy I find in my sorrows.
• God is the object of my love and devotion.
• God is the reason for my existence.
• God is the explanation for every dilemma.
• God’s ways are the measure of all failure and all success.
• God’s reward is the deepest level of motivation.
• God’s word is the “bottom line” of every question.
• God’s presence is my great desire.
So what do you say? Why are YOU here?
“The secret of man’s being is not only to live but to have something to live for.” — Fyodor
