Jesus, the Midterm Elections, and You
This post was written by Steve Hutchins, Elder
In just a few more weeks, our nation’s citizens will have the opportunity to go to the polls to choose a new Congress as well as many other offices, both state and local. As Christians, what is the most important contribution we could make to this process?
Well, certainly voting and other means of citizen involvement would be right up near the top of the list. As for the most important, though, I’d say that our most significant and needed contribution to this process is prayer.
One resource that aims to help the church do just that is www.PrayTheVote.com, and I commend it to you. And as you pray, avoid the temptation to link your prayers’ effectiveness to the rise or fall of a particular candidate, political party, or ideology (the Pray the Vote website should help you in this regard!)
Remember, our God is sovereign and it is “…He who changes the times and the epochs; He removes kings and establishes kings…”(Daniel 2:21).
Our job is laid out in 1 Timothy 2:1-3 to be faithful in praying for ALL our leaders. Let’s join together to do just that during this election season.
We’re living in historic times and, some would say, not in a good way. So was Judah once, which caused the prophet Habakkuk to cry out to God in despair. Part of God’s response was: “…Observe! Be astonished! Wonder! Because I am doing something in your days—You would not believe if you were told…” (Habakkuk 1:5).
Yes, the problems facing our country (and the world for that matter) are daunting; but we serve the King of Kings who has promised, “…The earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord, as the waters cover the sea.” (Habakkuk 2:14) Let’s pray for His kingdom to take root in our cities, state, nation, and beyond. And, by all means, take Jesus into the voting booth with you on November 2.
