Faith Like A Kid at VBS
This post was written by Becky Miller, who is teaching 4th graders in VBS this week
When did we stop sitting up front?
When did we stop answering questions?
Watch any group of grown-ups at a church event, and you’ll notice an empty front row and an awkward silence when the teacher or speaker asks a question.
In contrast, watch the 4th graders in my VBS class this week, and you’ll see them crush me back into the wall in an effort to sit as close to the front as possible and wave their hands wildly as they talk over each other trying to answer questions!
Several times, Jesus encouraged His followers to have faith like children:
Matthew 19:14 says, “Let the children come to me. Don’t stop them! For the Kingdom of Heaven belongs to those who are like these children.”
Mark 10:15 and Luke 18:17 say, “I tell you the truth, anyone who doesn’t receive the Kingdom of God like a child will never enter it.”
Matthew 18:3 says, “I tell you the truth, unless you turn from your sins and become like little children, you will never get into the Kingdom of Heaven.”
I think the enthusiasm of children is one of the attributes Jesus was commending.
In the opening session each morning, the kids jump up and get into the motions that go with the Sonsurf Beach Bash songs. During Bible lesson time, they pile on to the beach towels and can’t wait to volunteer to help out.
When in the process of growing up do we stop being so fired up about our faith?
What can you do this week to recapture the “joy of your salvation,” the excitement you had about God’s Kingdom when you were newly saved?
We still have two more mornings of VBS at CCF, so if your child (4 years old through 6th grade) would like to join us, please bring them! Our closing program is Friday evening at 6:30, and you’re invited to see what the kids have been learning all week…and hopefully get inspired by their enthusiasm!
