A Sept. 11 Reminder

A September 11th reminder: Trusting in your book or God’s Book?

Billy Graham’s daughter Anne Graham gave an extremely profound and insightful response regarding the attacks on Sept. 11. She said, “I believe God is deeply saddened by this, just as we are, but for years we’ve been telling God to get out of our schools, to get out of our government and to get out of our lives.

And being the gentleman He is, I believe He has calmly backed out. How can we expect God to give us His blessing and His protection if we demand He leave us alone?”

In light of recent events…terrorists attack, school shootings, etc. I think it started when atheist activist Madalyn Murray O’Hair complained she didn’t want prayer in our schools, and we said OK.

Her lawsuit also removed compulsory Bible reading from schools…the Bible that tells us “thou shalt not kill,” “thou shalt not steal,” and “love thy neighbor as thyself.” And we said OK.

Then Dr. Benjamin Spock said we shouldn’t spank our children when they misbehave because their little personalities would be warped and we might damage their self-esteem (Dr. Spock’s son committed suicide). We said an expert should know what he’s talking about. And we said OK.

Now we’re asking ourselves why our children have no conscience, why they don’t know right from wrong, and why it doesn’t bother them to kill strangers, their classmates, and themselves.

Probably, if we think about it long and hard enough, we can figure it out. I think it has a great deal to do with “WE REAP WHAT WE SOW.”

You may ask, why did the 9-11 tragedy happen? God made us with free will, so we could choose to worship Him. Freedom of will is necessary for this purpose. And so, God has given us free will, and He will not take it away from us. Could God have stopped the terrorists? Yes, by removing their free will. But then He would have had to remove yours and mine as well. He would have had to prevent every human attempt to sin and attack others. We could no longer be free to worship God or love each other. And this, God cannot and will not do.

As long as there is life on this fallen planet, there will be misused free will and its sin. Not because this is the will of God, but because it is the will of men.

Everybody in the world has a book that they are reading. When it is time to make decisions, all people groups draw on their experiences, their pasts, their feelings, families of origin, religious teachings, friends, books, media, Internet, and a host of other informational resources. Without their knowing it, these resources become their Bible! They may shake their fists at God’s Word and demean you for trusting in it, but the question remains: Can their book stand up to God’s Book, the Bible?

God’s book is still the best seller of all time and has stood the test of time for thousands of years.

Yes, it is true: “for years we’ve been telling God to get out of our schools, to get out of our government and to get out of our lives.”

September 11th is a reminder: Will you live by your book or God’s book? The last chapter is already written, and I can tell you, GOD WINS! I want to be on the winning side. How about you?
