30 Jul “Look Up” by Kitty Holt
Every day, my husband and I start the day with an early-morning walk. I spend the time talking to him and to God, and it’s my favorite time of day.
Several weeks ago, we were walking along, when suddenly the road ahead was covered with bird droppings. Covered. I was grossed out and started complaining about how much poop was covering the road. When I paused for a breath, my husband pointed to the branches above and said “look up.” I looked up and was surprised to see three big owls looking down at us. We stayed and watched them in wonder, and then continued on our walk. What a nice way to start the day.
As I thought back on that walk, I realized I was so focused on the mess in the road that I didn’t even think to look up. In fact, I realized that many times I’m so focused on the messes and difficulties in life that I don’t think to look up… to God.
I lift up my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth. (Psalm 121:1-2)
Lift up your eyes on high and see who has created these stars, The One who leads forth their host by number, He calls them all by name; because of the greatness of His might and the strength of His power, not one of them is missing. (Isaiah 40:26)
God is sovereign over all things, even the messes you and I are in the midst of. Bring him your complaints and your concerns. In the thick of difficulties and in the best of times, look up. He is there.
